Session 03
The Paper Loss Advantage: The Tax Benefits of Passive Investing
Wednesday, November 410:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET
For this discussion we will cover one of the advantages of passive investing: receiving income
from a deal while still showing a loss on paper. It is not a loophole or a trick. It is how
real estate has worked for decades, through things like cost segregation and bonus depreciation.
We will walk through why passive ownership is taxed so differently from the income you earn at
work, how those paper losses appear on your K-1, and help you understand the recapture process.
General principles only. Nothing in this session is tax advice.
What you will leave with
An understanding of why passive real estate is so tax-advantaged, and the right questions to
bring to your tax professional.
Save Your Seat
Whether you are new to passive investing or already holding positions, you will have a clearer view of what shows up on your return.
